BOOK REVIEW : THE BEAR AND THE NIGHTINGALE
Author : Katherine Arden
Genre : Fantasy Fiction
If you like getting lost in an alternate universe filled with magic, heroism, and folklore then this book is for you.
A modern fairytale, giving twists to Russian folklore, this book is pure magic set in medieval Russia. The protagonist, Vasya, is a strong headed girl looking for adventure and trouble follows. From the beginning she is portrayed as a girl who is different(she is not a girly-girl, she wanders in the woods alone, she rides on a horse). She basically portrays women of now,i.e, this modern world, so we easily fall in love with her.
There is a lot of suspense in this novel, I just couldn't wait to know what will happen next so it kept me reading.
The thing I liked the best about it was that the author didn't stretch one concept for too long, the moment I thought what if this same concept/story-line is stretched for the coming 2 books too, that would've made me stop reading this book but the author didn't disappoint me. The next book will have a story line of it's own!
One of the best relationship portrayed in this book is of Vasya and her brother. This relationship gives the book a sense of reality and I love it. I would recommend this book to anyone willing to leave their worries behind and just getting lost in a beautiful world.
My Verdict- 4/5
