WHY I CAN'T REVIEW, " REMNANTS OF A SEPARATION"

Author : Aanchal Malhotra
Genre : Non-fiction

There are good books. There are amazing books. There are books which make you laugh or/and cry, and then there are books which hit you hard and leave you numb.
This book tells the history of partition of India with the help of objects left from the past with the survivors or their family. I like reading books based on the partition of India  as it reminds us of why extreme measures and especially war is never the answer and this book did the same and so much more.
It left me numb, crying, smiling, and many more emotions all at once. It felt like I was living the stories told in this book, it felt like I was present when all the stories told were taking place.
This book emits the hardwork of the author and the lost memories of various families. I just can't pin-point my feelings to one chapter or paragraph. Since it's not a review, I'll be honest with you, I have never used so many sticky notes in one book as I have in this (35 to be precise) and that's because this book has taught me so much and the things which I have marked are stories I want to return back to, to gain wisdom and strength from.
This book also hit home for me, because I belong to a Muslim family who chose to stay in India during partition and it made me realise that the sole living member to witness this partition,my maternal grandfather have never talked about it and as the author said in her book that maybe someone had simply not asked her about the partition(referring to her grandmother). So I did ask my grandfather who is currently unwell but still spoke about it with all the courage he had,(it took him a moment to collect his thoughts about it) with a spark in his eyes he spoke about how our family was never hurt during the partition and a little bit more of why they stayed back. He spoke very little about it and I didn't force him.

I am no one to review memories, personal belongings, struggle, and hardwork.
This book made me realise that my family is connected to something unimaginable and something that was only a piece of knowledge for me until now. It made me realise how I am connected to the history of my country and how much more it means to me now to say that I am an Indian than it did before I knew these stories and the price people payed for it.
